The PSABE SOCCSARGEN Regional Convention 2025 united agricultural engineers across the region

Mindanao State University–General Santos proudly hosted the Philippine Society of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers (PSABE) SOCCSKSARGEN Annual Regional Convention and ABE Week Celebration from January 19 to 25, 2025, drawing participants from academic institutions, local government units, and the private sector. The week-long event provided a dynamic platform for the exchange of ideas and collaboration in the field of agricultural and biosystems engineering.

The convention opened with an inspiring message from Engr. Renel M. Alucilja, MSAE, Vice-President of PSABE Region 12, who welcomed both new and returning participants. “This year would be a unique one in the way we do our conventions. Marami dito bago sa organization at madami rin nagbabalik. I’m happy to see your faces this morning and would like to thank MSU-Gensan for hosting our event today,” he remarked.

Engr. Rener B. Tandugon, MSAE, Secretary of PSABE Region 12, introduced the list of participants, emphasizing the growing interest in PSABE’s activities. This was followed by a warm welcome address from Engr. Edward R. Lapong, Ph.D., who greeted attendees from MSU-Gensan, University of Southern Mindanao (USM), Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU), South Cotabato State College, and private sector partners. He stressed the relevance of the convention’s theme in addressing current food security challenges.

A major highlight was the TED Talk sessions, featuring cutting-edge topics delivered by distinguished speakers. These sessions covered:

  • Automated controlled environment systems for high-value crop production
  • Ultrasonic technology for food applications
  • Flow rates for aquaponics
  • Solar power integration for post-harvest facilities
  • RCEF mechanization
  • Water resource assessment
  • Machinery development aligned with the AFMechRDEN Agenda
  • Natural resource conservation

These engaging talks provided valuable knowledge sharing and inspired new approaches to agricultural engineering challenges.

The event also featured technical paper and poster presentations, categorized into mechanization and automation, irrigation and water conservation, and food processing. The sessions, moderated by Engr. Jackielou L. Paches and facilitated by Engr. Benedict U. Sioquim, highlighted innovative research and technological advancements across the field.

A plenary talk by Engr. Crestituto C. Mangaoang, PSABE Board Member, explored green infrastructure and the green economy within the context of FIRe 4.0. This session, followed by an open forum, encouraged active engagement and critical discussions among participants.

The convention concluded with:

  • A business meeting
  • The proclamation and oath-taking of the newly elected PSABE SOCCSKSARGEN Board of Trustees (BOTs)
  • Closing messages from PSABE leaders, including Engr. Edward R. Lapong, Ph.D., President of PSABE Region 12, and Engr. Janice P. Vargas, President of PSABE, Inc.
  • Closing remarks by Engr. Erwin A. Arguelles, Senior BOT Member

The ceremony also celebrated outstanding engineers from various sectors, recognizing their significant contributions to agricultural and biosystems engineering.

This year’s PSABE SOCCSKSARGEN Regional Convention not only showcased the latest innovations and trends in the discipline but also strengthened professional networks, laying the groundwork for future collaborations and advancements in support of sustainable agriculture, food security, and community development.
